About this app

SASSLA – Digital Platform for Early Warning and Comprehensive Risk Management

Receive the official signal from the Mexican Earthquake Early Warning System (SASMEX), along with emergency notices and public announcements from Civil Defense authorities.

SASSLA APP provides personalized information when the Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) is triggered:

• Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) of seismic waves at your location
• Approximate epicenter location
• Expected shaking intensity at your location (light, moderate, or strong)

[SASSLA APP REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION]

The EEW is a critical signal. It allows people to initiate preventive actions seconds before seismic waves capable of causing damage arrive.

⚠️ The EEW is not issued for every earthquake, only for those that pose a threat to your location.

FULL EEW SIGNAL BROADCAST COVERAGE IN SASSLA APP, BY STATE:

• Mexico City
• State of Mexico
• Morelos
• Puebla
• Tlaxcala
• Guerrero
• Oaxaca
• Michoacán
• Colima
• Jalisco

PARTIAL EEW COVERAGE:

• Chiapas
• Veracruz
• Tabasco
• Hidalgo
• Guanajuato
• Nayarit

SASMEX EARTHQUAKE DETECTION COVERAGE:

SASMEX detection coverage includes 96 seismic sensors placed throughout the most seismically active regions of the country, along the Pacific Ocean and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, covering the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Puebla.

Its monitoring infrastructure relies on highly reliable, redundant, and resilient systems in electrical, electronic, computing, and telecommunications engineering, ensuring continuous operation 365 days a year.

EEW LEAD TIME:

SASMEX defines “lead time” as the interval between the moment the population hears the official seismic alert and the moment strong seismic waves reach the alerted location.

The system can provide approximately 20 to 120 seconds of lead time, depending on the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the user’s location.

For example, an earthquake originating off the Michoacán coast could provide over 100 seconds of lead time for Mexico City, while locations closer to the epicenter will have shorter lead times.

INNOVATION AND PRESTIGE OF SASMEX:

SASMEX is a 100% Mexican development built with modern technology. Through science and engineering by a highly experienced team in telemetry systems, electronics, geophysics, computer science, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and advanced computing, it broadcasts alerts using the fastest earthquake alert algorithm in the world, implemented across its monitoring and warning systems—making it the world’s fastest seismic alert system.

SASMEX is a member of international organizations dedicated to disaster risk reduction. It actively participates in national and international events, forums, and symposia with seismology experts, and regularly hosts specialists from around the world at its headquarters in Mexico.

Some of its collaborators include:
• International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI)
• United States Geological Survey (USGS)
• Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
• American Geophysical Union (AGU)
• Seismological Society of America (SSA)

SASMEX: THE ONLY OFFICIAL EARTHQUAKE ALERT SYSTEM IN MEXICO

SASMEX is recognized as the first earthquake early warning system in the world and a global pioneer in seismic alert development.

Its alerts are public and free of charge, and it is officially endorsed by federal authorities as the ONLY OFFICIAL seismic alert system in Mexico.

Fantastic app! It's super accurate, also the sound of the alarm depends on the intensity of the earthquake. I recently experienced a light intensity earthquake and the alarm wasn't as crazy as with a higher magnitude quake. Love it.

When it works, it's informative ... just not sure (about) when it doesn't. I've felt tremors, for sure, that never registered. Once I was alerted of an imminent or actual seismic event close by. Most often I'm notified of seismic events far away. I'm waiting, very patiently, to be notified of an earthquake, imminent or actual, in proximity (CDMX). Obviously hopeful that I wont be so notified but, if it's warranted, much rather hear the app's alarm and see the alert on my device.

Love this app. Sometimes it sounds a full minute before the alarms in my neighborhood. Amo esta app. A veces suena un minuto antes de la alarma de mi colonia. Also, for the all the folks here complaining this alarm is loud and makes light, what are they honestly expecting from an alarm designed to wake you out of a deep sleep to literally save your life? 🤦 If you want to turn off the alarm or the lights, yes it's possible in the app too.

You must change the strobe light! I hit the test button and it was really confusing. The led light should be just turned on to work as a flashlight. The strobe can cause dizziness and it can affect photosensitive people. You should also add and easier way to turn off the alarm, I had to go to the notification bar and tap a button there. When an earthquake is happening you don't want all that distracting stuff happening. I heard it, now shut and let the led light on untill I turn it off.

I never had a problem with the notifications coming on time. Notification is loud but it helped me wake up at least once when the outside national sirens wouldn't have during a late night earthquake. It can also now be stopped as soon as you click on the notification on the screen. Pretty good, accurate and useful for early alerts.
