Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about APKApps, APK files, downloads, archive listings, account features, and safety. Click a question to expand it.

1The basics

What is an APK?

An APK (Android Package) is the file format Android uses to distribute and install apps. It's a zip archive containing the app's code, resources, manifest, and signing information.

Installing an APK directly is called sideloading. It's a built-in Android feature.

What is APKApps?

APKApps is an independent Android app discovery and APK archive platform. We catalog apps for phones, tablets, Android TV, and Android Auto, and we surface technical metadata so you can verify a file before installing.

Read more on our About page.

Is APKApps free to use?

Yes. Browsing and downloading is free. We may show contextual advertising or sponsored content to support hosting costs, and we may offer optional accounts and developer tools in the future.

Is APKApps affiliated with Google or any app developer?

No. APKApps is operated independently. We are not affiliated with Google, the Android Open Source Project, or any individual app developer or publisher whose apps may appear in our index. Trademarks and logos belong to their respective owners.

2Downloading & installing

How do I install an APK?

Use our step-by-step install guide. It covers phones, tablets, Android TV, and emulators.

Why does Android say “App not installed”?

Most common reasons:

  • You already have the app installed with a different signing certificate.
  • The APK is for a different CPU architecture (ARM, ARM64, x86, x86_64).
  • You're trying to downgrade — install a newer version or uninstall first.
  • Insufficient storage or a partial download.
Why is my browser blocking the download?

Some browsers and antivirus tools warn on any APK download by default. You can usually keep the file via the browser's "Keep dangerous file" / "Download anyway" prompt. Always verify the SHA-256 hash on the listing afterwards.

What's a "split APK" or "APKM/XAPK" file?

Modern apps are often packaged as App Bundles that produce multiple split APKs (one base + per-architecture/per-density splits). Some sites repackage these into .apkm or .xapk files. Use a sideload tool that supports split installs (or adb install-multiple) to install them.

3Safety & verification

Are APK downloads from APKApps safe?

We publish the technical signals you need to verify a file — SHA-256 hash, package name, signing cert, declared permissions — but we do not certify any APK as "safe." See our Safety & Verification page for how to evaluate a file.

What does the SHA-256 hash mean?

It's a 64-character cryptographic fingerprint of the file. If your downloaded copy hashes to the same value as the one we publish, the file is bit-for-bit identical to what we catalogued. Learn more.

Why do some apps request scary-looking permissions?

Permissions describe what an app could request — not what it always does. Many are legitimate (e.g. camera in a photo editor). Be suspicious when permissions don't match the app's purpose.

I think a listing is malicious. What do I do?

Please report it immediately. Include the package name, version, and what tipped you off. We act on credible reports quickly.

4Listings & content

Why don't all apps have screenshots or descriptions?

APKApps has two tiers: curated listings with full metadata, and an archive of raw inventory with limited metadata. Archive entries may not have screenshots, descriptions, or category tags — only basic file facts. More about how we organize content.

How do I get my app listed or removed?

Developers can submit apps via Submit APK. To request removal of your own app, contact us from a verifiable developer email. For copyright takedowns, file a DMCA request.

Why is an old version still listed?

Archive entries deliberately preserve older builds for users who need them (compatibility, research, modding). The latest curated version is always shown first when available.

5Accounts

Do I need an account to use APKApps?

No. Browsing, searching, and downloading don't require an account. Accounts are for submitting apps, tracking submissions, and accessing optional account features.

How do I reset my password?

Go to the login page and click Forgot?. We'll email you a reset link.

How do I delete my account?

Contact us from your registered email and we'll process the deletion. Submission records may be retained in anonymized form for legal and operational purposes — see our Privacy Policy.
